Stephen was in ‘in prison’ to raise attention for Amnesty International’s campaign.  Around the world people are in prison because have promoted and defended human rights. Others are detained simply because they are themselves. Examples include lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender (LGBT people), persons belonging to vulnerable ethnic groups or communities, or women who have “sinned” against discriminatory moral laws.

These people are called prisoners of conscience. Peter Benenson, Amnesty’s founder, invented this concept in 1961.
